Dogs are neglected, abused, and abandoned in vast areas in South Africa. One significant reason is immense overpopulation through unchecked breeding. ALECS’s aim is to reduce the canine population by offering free sterilization to underprivileged dog owners and creating a population of sterile, vaccinated, and healthy animals.

People living in distant rural areas do not have any veterinary facilities on hand and no means to take their animals to the next veterinarian. Thousands of rural animals depend on ALECS for their health and wellbeing. We offer primary health care to all rural animals and regular treatment for internal and external parasites as well as general health checks to dogs. Sick dogs will be taken into foster care, nursed back to health, sterilized and vaccinated, before they are returned back to their guardians. This further promotes a sterile and healthy canine population.

ALECS thrives for a long term and sustainable change to animals in rural areas and to promote the One-Health-Principle, that healthy animals create healthy communities. We conduct regular visits to animal owners to help, assist, and educate about the needs of their charges. We work with adults and children alike and we educate and employ community members working as ambassadors, assistants, and link between ALECS and the communities.
